Among vintage Rolex references, the Turn-O-Graph remains one of the brand's most underrated creations. Introduced in 1953, ahead of the Submariner and GMT-Master, it was among Rolex's earliest watches to feature a rotating timing bezel and later became affectionately known as the Thunderbird.

The Ref. 1625/8 features a yellow-gold case, a graduated rotating bezel and a classic date display. Its most captivating feature, however, is the unusual Middle Eastern emblem dial. Set against a silver sunburst background, the elaborate central crest incorporates a falcon and a turquoise-coloured shield, accompanied by Arabic inscriptions that lend the watch a distinctive historical and regional identity.

During the latter half of the twentieth century, Rolex developed significant relationships with Middle Eastern clients. Special-order dials bearing national emblems, royal signatures and institutional insignia have since become a fascinating niche within vintage watch collecting.

Beyond its precious-metal construction and elegant proportions, this particular Turn-O-Graph demonstrates how a wristwatch can transcend its original purpose to become a tangible expression of history and cultural identity.
