Among the many interpretations of the Cartier Tank, the Tank Chinoise remains one of the most architectural. First introduced in 1922, at a time when European decorative arts were increasingly fascinated by Asian aesthetics, the Chinoise departed from the vertical emphasis of the original 1917 Tank. Its defining feature is the pair of horizontal bars crossing over the vertical brancards, a composition inspired by the structural language of traditional Chinese architecture.

This Ref. 2684G belongs to the highly regarded Collection Privée Cartier Paris (CPCP), Cartier’s program dedicated to reviving historic designs with serious mechanical watchmaking. Running from 1998 to 2008, CPCP revisited archival shapes including the Tortue, Tank Cintrée and Tank Chinoise, often in remarkably faithful proportions.

Executed in 18k rose gold, the Ref. 2684G measures approximately 28 × 29mm. Its silvered gold dial features an elaborate radiating rosette guilloché pattern, surrounded by black Roman numerals and a chemin-de-fer minute track. Blued Breguet-style hands and the sapphire cabochon crown provide the familiar flashes of blue associated with classical Cartier.

The mechanical side is equally important. Through the sapphire caseback sits the manually wound Calibre 437 MC, based on Piaget’s ultra-thin 430P. Its bridges are decorated with the repeating double-C Cartier motif, transforming what might otherwise have been a discreet dress-watch movement into something unmistakably CPCP.

What makes the Ref. 2684G particularly compelling is the way it brings together three chapters of Cartier history: the Orientalist imagination of the 1920s, the geometric discipline of Art Deco, and CPCP’s turn-of-the-century revival of traditional mechanical watchmaking. It may not be the most famous Tank, but it is one of the clearest examples of Cartier treating the watch case as architecture.
