Founded in Le Locle in 1846, Ulysse Nardin built its early reputation on precision marine chronometers. In the modern era, however, the manufacture has become equally associated with experimental watchmaking. From the astronomical complications of the late 20th century to the groundbreaking Freak and its pioneering use of silicon, Ulysse Nardin has repeatedly challenged conventional ideas of how a mechanical watch should look and function.
The Blast Tourbillon Ref. 1723-400/03, introduced as part of the Blast collection in 2020, continues that philosophy in distinctly architectural form. Its imposing 45mm titanium case is defined by sharply faceted lugs inspired by the angular geometry of stealth aircraft, while the extensively openworked construction largely eliminates the traditional dial.
Dominating the watch is a dramatic X-shaped architecture, formed by blue-toned bridges that visually connect the movement’s key components. At six o’clock sits the flying tourbillon, seemingly suspended within the movement thanks to the absence of an upper bridge. Rather than treating the tourbillon as a discreet classical complication, Ulysse Nardin turns it into the visual anchor of the entire watch.
Inside is the automatic Calibre UN-172, equipped with a micro-rotor and offering approximately 72 hours of power reserve. The movement also incorporates silicon escapement technology, continuing Ulysse Nardin’s longstanding experimentation with the material.
What makes the Blast Tourbillon compelling is its rejection of traditional tourbillon aesthetics. There are no restrained precious-metal surfaces or conventional decorative codes here. Instead, titanium, skeletonisation and aggressively geometric bridges transform one of watchmaking’s oldest complications into something distinctly contemporary. The result feels less like a traditional complicated watch and more like a piece of mechanical architecture built for the wrist.
