In 1969, Zenith introduced the El Primero.

It was more than simply an automatic chronograph movement. With its high frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, it became an important milestone in the history of the mechanical chronograph. And among the first watches to house the El Primero, the A384 was perhaps one of the most immediately recognisable.

Fifty years later, in 2019, Zenith did not redesign it. Instead, it simply made it again.

The A384 Revival Ref. 03.A384.400/21.C815 retains the original’s 37mm dimensions. Its sharply faceted tonneau-shaped stainless-steel case, white lacquered panda dial, three black chronograph registers, red central chronograph seconds hand, and discreet date window at 4:30 faithfully reproduce the proportions of the 1969 watch. Even the geometry of the case was digitally reconstructed from the original production plans.

The genuinely modern part is hidden around the back.

Visible through the sapphire caseback is the El Primero 400 automatic chronograph movement. Its 5Hz frequency, column-wheel chronograph architecture, and approximately 50-hour power reserve carry forward the technical foundations established by the El Primero more than half a century ago.

That is what makes the A384 Revival so compelling. It is not simply about how convincingly “vintage” it looks.

It is the fact that, between 1969 and 2019, Zenith discovered there was remarkably little about the original design that needed changing.
