The A. Lange & Söhne GRAND 1815 Ref. 233.026 is an exceptionally simple watch that captures much of what defines Lange watchmaking. There is no oversized date, power-reserve indicator, or elaborate complication—only hours, minutes, and small seconds at six o’clock. Its purpose was straightforward: to translate the classical language of the 1815 into a larger 40mm format, while preserving the restraint of a traditional German precision watch.

The name “1815” itself refers to the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, making the collection one of the clearest expressions of the manufacture’s connection to Saxon watchmaking history. The Ref. 233.026 follows that philosophy closely. Its silver-colored dial features Arabic numerals, a railway-style minute track, and a recessed subsidiary seconds dial, while the heat-blued steel hands provide the strongest visual accent.

The “GRAND” designation explains the most obvious difference from the standard 1815. Its 40mm case is crafted from 18k white gold, giving the dial considerably more breathing room and allowing the typography and minute track to feel particularly expansive. Despite the increased diameter, the case remains only 8.9mm thick, preserving the elegant proportions expected of a classical dress watch.

The more characteristically Lange side of the watch appears when it is turned over. Inside is the manually wound Calibre L051.1, a movement comprising 188 components, operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and delivering approximately 55 hours of power reserve.

Through the sapphire-crystal caseback, the movement immediately reveals the visual vocabulary that distinguishes A. Lange & Söhne from traditional Swiss haute horlogerie. The broad three-quarter plate in untreated German silver dominates the architecture, accompanied by blued screws, gold chatons, ruby jewels, and beautifully finished steel components.

Most captivating is the balance cock. Its hand-engraved decoration introduces a deliberately human element into an otherwise highly disciplined movement. Because the engraving is executed individually by hand, subtle variations exist from one movement to another—one of the small details that has become synonymous with modern Lange watchmaking.

That contrast is ultimately what makes the GRAND 1815 so compelling. From the front, it is almost austere; from the back, it reveals virtually everything collectors associate with Lange.
